Neal Hutcheson will be joining us with his film Popcorn Sutton: A Hell of a Life. Here are some questions to let you get to know more about him!
What is your connection to the South?
Born and raised in Chapel Hill, NC. Not technically considered the South. Became captivated by southern and rural culture while documenting dialect and culture in the mountains of North Carolina.
Where did you get your inspiration for this work?
Was documenting Appalachian culture in North Carolina for a film called Mountain Talk and met the subject of the current film. Documented his last run of moonshine in a film called The Last One, and later continued to travel and film with him as began to reveal more of his life and illegal liquor operation to me.
How did you start making films?
I started making nonnarrative, experimental films in college in a desperate ploy to articulate my jumbled thoughts and save my life. It worked.
Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?
Yes.
What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?
Seeing films, meeting filmmakers.
Why should someone see your film?
This film is funny, sad, and true. If someone is not interested in those things, they should not see the film. If someone likes the television show Moonshiners, this film is not like that show. You do not have to drink liquor to enjoy this movie, but it wouldn’t hurt.
