Kavanah & DL Anderson will be joining us with their film Grace’s One & Only Casseroni. Here are some questions to let you get to know more about them!
What is your connection to the South?
We have called Durham, North Carolina home for the past 10 years.
Where did you get your inspiration for this work?
The first time we saw Frank he was wearing black silk pajamas and doing somersaults down our street at night–what more inspiration do you need?
How did you start making films?
We both took classes at the Center For Documentary Studies at Duke University and quickly became enamored with the craft. DL grew up making home videos with his friends, with credits including Home Alone 3 (the unauthorized sequel) and The Adventures of M&M Man. Kavanah would go story collecting and has journals filled with her finds.
Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?
Before saying grace, Frank thought it would be good if we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We all found some enjoyment from reciting that old grade school standard.
What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?
Bringing a dish to the Slow Food dinner on Sunday, the taco party at the Whig and meeting fellow filmmakers/dancing with the Indie Grits family. We look forward to driving back across the North Carolina border with a whole different perspective on our neighbors to the South.
Why should someone see your film?
The simple act of cooking a meal with a stranger can teach you volumes about the past and the world you inhabit together; especially if they’re someone you might otherwise dismiss.
