Introducing Filmmaker Kelsey Velez!

Kelsey Velez

Kelsey Velez will be joining us with her film DAIMON. Here are some questions to let you get to know more about her!

What is your connection to the South?

I grew up in Orlando, FL. I went to school in Orange County and attended the University of Florida for my Bachelor’s degree. I lived in Miami briefly. Before living in Florida, my family and I lived in Fayetteville, NC.

Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

Daimon was inspired by my corrective instinct, I guess. I think I just felt like the rotoscoping job needed to be acknowledged in a way the other videos on Nick Briz’s site hadn’t. I think, unless you’re a graphic designer by trade or by nature, the prompt for the Rihanna vid is actually really challenging. It’s like asking someone to decorate a wall in your house, or like designing a background for your Xanga page.

How did you start making films?

The first image I ever shot on film was an image of a pair of shadows on the pavement belonging to Brendan and Jeremy Smyth. I gravitate toward film because it demands a degree of expertise not required by video. Once you know the rules, they’re easier to manipulate. Video is far less interesting in that respect. I wouldn’t choose to do something in video if it wasn’t out of necessity.

Why should someone see your film?

Anyone should watch my video if they want to challenge their patience. Someone should watch my video if they’re somebody.
