Q&A With Steve Daniels

Title: M is for Marauder
Date: Friday, April 18
Time: 7 pm
Place: Tapps Art Center

Baby Steve

1. What is your connection to the South?
My family is from Arkansas, but I grew up in the Upstate of South Carolina.

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?
I saw George Miller’s “Road Warrior” as a kid and it had a profound effect.

3. How did you start making films?
I got my hands on a vhs camcorder and made no-budget, backyard action horror films with my friends and younger brother. I’m pretty much doing the same thing now.

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?
Since my film was shot on super 8mm, it is silent, so all the sounds had to be recorded separately and placed in post. I was recording lead actress Emily Olyarchuk in her back yard screaming for her attack scene in the film, when her neighbor heard the commotion and ran out horrified, threatening to call the police. At the exact same time, a friend of Emily’s had driven up in the front of the house not knowing that we were recording, heard her cries of agony, and ran to the backyard with fists drawn in full attack / rescue mode. I wanna say he might have been holding a rake as a weapon as well. Details are fuzzy.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?
I love seeing other peoples work and being inspired by them.

6. Why should someone see your film?
It’s only 3 1/2 minutes long, and has a flying tampon in it.
